The Flip Slide pocket camcorder

By John Virata
Cisco Systems' Flip Slide is Flip Video's latest high definition pocket camcorder targeted at those who like the simplicity and ease of use of a pocket camcorder combined with HD quality video capabilities. The Slide is about the same size as the Flip Ultra HD but sports a new slide feature that makes it a bit different. The screen slides at a 10 o clock angle for viewing your videos, and the screen itself is touch capable, enabling you to slide your fingers across the screen to get to the video you want to watch.
The Slide retains the same touch screen capture and playback controls as the mino, UltraHD and other Flip cameras, and you can still watch your videos in the non slide position. Sliding the screen out gives you a larger screen view (3-inch transflective touch screen), the capability to access your videos by sliding your finger across the screen (as well as using the built in slide feature that is exposed once you slide the screen up), and access to the Slide's settings such as time, record light, date, and tones.
The Flip Slide has a screen resolution of 400x240 pixels, and captures 30 frames per second H.264 video (8.8Mbps) at 1280x720 resolution in high definition.  It is built around an f/2.4, fixed focus lens with 2x digital zoom capabilities. Its dimensions are still minuscule at 4.13" x 2.17" x 0.98". It still connects to the computer via the built in flip out USB arm, while an optional HDMI mini connector is available as an option. The Slide is rated at four hours of capture time with its built in 16GB of internal memory and relies on an internal rechargeable lithium ion battery that can be charged via the USB arm or an optional Flip Video power adapter.

First Impressions
Flip Video camcorders have defined the pocket camcorder space with easy to use camcorders and an equally simple software solution in FlipShare. FlipShare makes it so easy to view, organize, and upload your videos to sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube, while making it equally easy to share your videos privately via Flip Channels. The Flip Slide is more novelty than revolutionary with its touch screen capabilities and slide up display. The major advantage to the slide up display is the ease in which you can share the videos while they are still in the camcorder's memory. It is a decent touch implementation but I am not all sure that it is necessary. It is more of a "we can put a touch screen on a camcorder" versus a "we should put a touch screen on a camcorder."

The Flip Slide still shoots very good to excellent quality video given the form factor, and four hours of HD video is quite enough for most events. The Flip is small enough to carry with you all the time, and the HD quality gives you options. During my sister's wedding I shot last year, I gave my nephew a Flip Ultra to shoot candid shots before and during the wedding. He was able to get some pretty cool video of the groom pre-wedding as well as the bride, maids of honor, and others in the wedding party with the camera, shots that made it into the final DVD. That candid aspect can really work well with the form factor of the Flip camera. $279.
